More great news from Breya!

Breya, like many students, is juggling online school with in-person commitments. And Covid still affects everything. But she’s also got two early college acceptances, so she has choices for her future. Congratulations, Breya! Read the full interview below.

Meet the Class gets updated each month from September to May. Each installment features an interview about both the facts and the feelings of where the student is in the process.

How was your Thanksgiving? Is there anything you're particularly thankful for this year? And what are your plans for the longer winter break at the end of this month?

Thanksgiving wasn’t as good as it could’ve been due to COVID but it was okay. I’m thankful for the fact that I have my family and as far as I can tell, my plans aren’t changing.

Let's catch up on your college list. When I last heard from you, it was:

Ohio State (applied EA)

Hampton

Howard

Spelman

North Carolina A&T State

Xavier

Columbia

University of Chicago

University of Michigan

University of Pennsylvania

Is that still the list? Any additions or changes?

This is still the list as of right now. I have applied to Hampton, North Carolina A&T (Accepted), and Xavier (Accepted). I don’t plan on changing anything as of now. I am kind of relying on recommendation letters to see if I actually apply or not to some of them.

You've got a lot of HBCUs on your list. What's most appealing to you about an HBCU? Do you have friends and/or family who attended an HCBU?

I grew up in a predominantly-Caucasian neighborhood. When I started at my new school, I was surrounded by people who looked like me and it is kind of interesting. I have a few family members who went to HBCUs. My uncle is a professor at one (not one that I’m applying to though).

Speaking of family, what does your family think about your college list? Do they have any preferences? Are you feeling any pressure from your parents to go in a particular direction?

They say that they are good choices but they are scared. They want me to stay in state. Everyone wants me to go to Ohio State but I feel like there are too many people I am related to there. My mom wants me to stay as close as possible so probably Akron U or Kent-Stark.

How is school going? I assume you're still online? Are any of your extracurricular clubs running, or is it just class? Are you hopeful that you can salvage some of the spring semester?

School is exhausting right now. We are still online but for exam week, which is next week, we have to take them on campus. All of our clubs are still running, including my own. Everything is in the process of being expanded so it can happen in both school and online. I’m not sure how the final semester will play out. I am hopeful but I’m not expecting it.
