Three quick questions with The College of William and Mary

For Three Quick Questions, I send the same three questions to admissions representatives at colleges all over the country (the subject line of the e-mail is “Three quick questions”), and then I hope to hear back from them. When I do, I post them on Apply with Sanity. It’s that simple.

The three questions are meant to probe some of the things that make a school unique but that aren’t easily captured as a stat to go in a book or web search.

This response is from Logan Reed, Assistant Dean of Admission at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

What is a course, tradition, program or event that is unique to the College of William & Mary?

As the 2nd oldest college in America, we have many unique traditions. Here is a link to all of our traditions at William & Mary. My favorite tradition is Convocation: It all begins with Opening Convocation, the official start of the academic year and a chance for the entire W&M community — students, faculty and staff — to welcome the incoming class. After listening to a convocation speaker, the president of the university leads the new students through the Wren portico to the wild cheers and warm handshakes of the crowd. Afterward, everyone digs into a delicious picnic dinner with live music.

Our unique required curriculum is the College Curriculum. It is a dynamic curriculum that includes classes throughout a students four years ending with a capstone in their respective major.

Naturally every college wants to recruit the perfect student--high grades, high test scores, involved in their community, leadership...everything. But what kinds of imperfect students tend to flourish at William & Mary?

Students who are passionate, have a thirst for knowledge, and are positive/encouraging. The smart, curious, authentic, and quirky students thrive here.

When people come to visit Williamsburg, what's a place off campus that you recommend they check out while they're there?

I would recommend that they check out Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens Amusement Park, Williamsburg Premium Outlets, and Aromas Café or the Cheese Shop for lunch.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, here are three easy things you can do:

  1. Share it on your social media feeds so your friends and colleagues can see it too.

  2. See which other colleges and universities answered the questions.

  3. Is there a school you’d like to hear from? Let me know, and I’ll make sure they get the questions.

Apply with Sanity doesn’t have ads or annoying pop-ups. It doesn’t share user data, sell user data, or even track personal data. It doesn’t do anything to “monetize” you. You’re nothing but a reader to me, and that means everything to me.
