Three quick questions with Michigan Technological University

For Three Quick Questions, I send the same three questions to admissions representatives at colleges all over the country (the subject line of the e-mail is “Three quick questions”), and then I hope to hear back from them. When I do, I post them on Apply with Sanity. It’s that simple.

The three questions are meant to probe some of the things that make a school unique but that aren’t easily captured as a stat to go in a book or web search.

This response is from Christine Grotzke, Regional Admissions Manager at Michigan Tech University.

What is a course, tradition, program or event that is unique to Michigan Tech University?

One of the most unique traditions at Michigan Tech is our Winter Carnival, an annual celebration that takes place every winter. It is a time to celebrate the large amounts of snowfall Michigan's Upper Peninsula receives each February. Winter Carnival is characterized by snow statues, outdoor games (think: snow volleyball and human ice bowling), and many student activities. Check out what we did this past year here.

Naturally every college wants to recruit the perfect student--high grades, high test scores, involved in their community, leadership...everything. But what kinds of imperfect students tend to flourish at Michigan Tech?

As a selective institution, yes, many of our students are high achieving.  However, it is our students' work ethic, creativity, and passion that drive them to be as successful as they are.  Students who have a growth mindset are our favorite in and out of the classroom and many of those students learned by working really hard for that "B" in high school while their friends were "A" students without much effort.

When people come to visit Houghton, what's a place off campus that you recommend they check out while they're there?

Ask anyone on campus and they will probably have a different answer.  Personally, I love to eat and one of the things I can't leave Houghton without having is Pannukakku from Suomi Restaurant. The Upper Penninsula is where many people who immigrated from Finland settled and these custard-like pancakes are one of the many Finnish specialties you can find.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, here are three easy things you can do:

  1. Share it on your social media feeds so your friends and colleagues can see it too.

  2. See which other colleges and universities answered the questions.

  3. Is there a school you’d like to hear from? Let me know, and I’ll make sure they get the questions.

Apply with Sanity doesn’t have ads or annoying pop-ups. It doesn’t share user data, sell user data, or even track personal data. It doesn’t do anything to “monetize” you. You’re nothing but a reader to me, and that means everything to me.
