Three quick questions with Miami University

For Three Quick Questions, I send the same three questions to admissions representatives at colleges all over the country (the subject line of the e-mail is “Three quick questions”), and then I hope to hear back from them. When I do, I post them on Apply with Sanity. It’s that simple.

The three questions are meant to probe some of the things that make a school unique but that aren’t easily captured as a stat to go in a book or web search.

This response is from Larissa Marple, Assistant Director for Regional Recruitment at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

What is a course, tradition, program or event that is unique to Miami University?

A fun tradition Miami University has is students playing Broomball! It is similar to hockey but with "brooms" and a "ball" instead of sticks and a puck, and you play on the ice in tennis shoes not ice skates. It can be competitive, but it is also hilarious to try walking (and running) on ice.

Naturally every college wants to recruit the perfect student--high grades, high test scores, involved in their community, leadership...everything. But what kinds of imperfect students tend to flourish at Miami?

The type of imperfect student (which, let's be real, is everyone in some way) that flourishes at Miami is the one that is not sure of what direction they want to go, but is curious about figuring it out. We are not looking for students that have their whole lives figured out, but rather students that are willing to try new things, even if it means their path does not follow a straight line.

When people come to visit Oxford, what's a place off campus that you recommend they check out while they're there?

My #1 recommendation is always Bagel & Deli! It is a local bagel sandwich shop and is a great place to stop and grab a bite while you explore Uptown. I've truly never had a bagel sandwich that is as good as Bagel & Deli.

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this post, here are three easy things you can do:

  1. Share it on your social media feeds so your friends and colleagues can see it too.

  2. See which other colleges and universities answered the questions.

  3. Is there a school you’d like to hear from? Let me know, and I’ll make sure they get the questions.

Apply with Sanity doesn’t have ads or annoying pop-ups. It doesn’t share user data, sell user data, or even track personal data. It doesn’t do anything to “monetize” you. You’re nothing but a reader to me, and that means everything to me.
