Tyra is working through a mess

Tyra is ok, but she’s not having the best fall. She hasn’t seen her best friend in a long time, her grandfather’s not doing well, she seems less certain about her vet program than she did a month ago, and about ten percent of her school has tested positive for Covid so far. Read the full interview below.

Meet the Class gets updated each month from September to May. Each installment features an interview about both the facts and the feelings of where the student is in the process.

Interviews may be edited lightly for clarity and grammar. Names may be changed to protect privacy.

Tyra attends a public high school in Iowa

How's school going? Are you still there in person, or did it move online?

Senior year has been chaotic. Our school is a mess and they have no idea what they are doing. First they split classes into two so half of the kids would leave the room and attend class virtually from the auditorium and the two groups would switch everyday. Now, we have to wear masks in classes that we can not social distance in. Luckily for me that is only three out of my six classes, but we are still in person.

How would you describe the mood of your school right now, especially the senior class?

The senior class at my school this year is extremely close. There are only 65 of us and we are all friends with each other. I think we are all upset over our senior year being ruined. I am especially sad because my best friend chose online schooling and I have only seen him once this year.

How big a problem has Covid been at your school? Have there been any cases?

COVID was a huge problem, and we had upwards of 20 classes in our small 200 population high school. It is coming down now, though, and people are slowly returning to school from quarantine.

What do you do at school other than class? Are you involved in any clubs or teams?

Outside of school I am in speech which is not for a while yet. I am in yearbook though which is a class that I have daily but take pictures for them outside of school. I have also pondered joining golf this year.

What do you do outside of school?

I babysit for a family with two and currently have a job at a pizza place. Other than that I often spend time with my animals, especially when it comes to walking my dogs every day. I have a rescued pit bull who is three years old and a great dane puppy who is five months old.

If I read your response correctly last month, you've already been accepted to the technical college, but you're still waiting to hear back about the particular program within the technical college you're hoping to be a part of. Is that right? Has there been any news?

I still have not heard about my acceptance to the technical school and it gives me a lot of anxiety not knowing if I got in or not.

You also thought you might be moving, and that you would have a chance to work at a vet clinic. Did that happen? If not, is it still a possibility?

We have decided to stay in the town we are in because my grandpa is not doing so good lately and we do not want to be far from him.

Any other news?

We have a group senior photo coming up, and it will be interesting to see how it goes.
